Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in September and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.
