Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
